16-Year-Old’s Brave River Rescue Saves Three Girls and a Police Officer

Heroic stories often remind us that courage can appear in the most unexpected places. In one dramatic moment near the Pascagoula River, a teenager’s quick thinking and determination helped prevent a tragedy.

What began as an ordinary night quickly turned into a life-or-death situation—and a 16-year-old chose to act without hesitation.

The incident occurred in Moss Point, Mississippi, when a car carrying three teenage girls accidentally drove down a boat launch and into the river.

According to local authorities, the vehicle slid into the water and began sinking, leaving the girls struggling to escape. The river’s current and darkness made the situation even more dangerous as the passengers fought to stay afloat.

Nearby, a high school student named Corion Evans witnessed the terrifying moment unfold.

Without waiting for emergency crews, Evans immediately ran toward the water.

A Split-Second Decision

Evans later explained that he barely had time to think.

After seeing the car sink and hearing cries for help, he removed his shoes and shirt and jumped straight into the river. His goal was simple: reach the victims as quickly as possible.

The teenagers had managed to climb out of the vehicle, but they were exhausted and struggling to stay above water.

Evans began guiding them toward safety one at a time, swimming through the dark water and helping keep them afloat.

The Rescue Becomes Even More Dangerous

As the rescue unfolded, Gary Mercer, a police officer who responded to the emergency, entered the river to assist.

But during the effort to bring one of the victims to shore, Mercer began to struggle after swallowing water and was pulled under by the current.

Seeing the officer in distress, Evans did not hesitate.

He turned back into the river and helped guide the officer to safety as well.

In total, the teenager helped save four lives that night.

Exhausted but Determined

The rescue required multiple trips through the water.

Evans later said his legs were extremely tired after swimming back and forth several times between the victims and the shore. Still, he refused to stop until everyone was safe.

Thanks to his efforts, the three girls and the officer were brought to land and taken to the hospital, where they recovered.

Local officials later praised Evans for his courage and selflessness, noting that the situation could have ended very differently without his help.

A Community Recognizes a Hero

After the rescue, the city of Moss Point honored Evans with a certificate of commendation for his bravery.

Police leaders publicly thanked him for risking his own safety to help others in danger.
