School Bus Driver Builds Girl A Wheelchair Ramp after Seeing her Struggle to Leave House
Thomas Mitchell is a mechanic from Clarksville, Tennessee, who fills in as a substitute bus driver for the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System when he’s needed. His route occasionally includes bringing a group of special needs children to school.
One morning, Mitchell noticed a mother struggling to bring her daughter, who is in a wheelchair, down the front steps of her porch. He couldn’t shake the image from his head. He wanted to do something to help this family out.
So, a few days later, he called the mother and offered to build a customized wheelchair ramp for her daughter — free of charge.
Mitchell gathered tools, co-workers and a few friends to help him. He even got a local Lowe’s Home Improvement store to donate the lumber.
A few months after the initial phone call, Mitchell and his crew arrived at the family’s home and started working. In less than three hours, the little girl got the ramp she needed.
Stories like these are incredible because they make us realize that there’s a bigger world beyond ourselves and that we can make a difference in it if we choose to.
