Community Leaders Call for Federal Action to Address Ongoing Concerns in Queens
Community members in Queens, New York, are raising their voices again about ongoing issues along Roosevelt Avenue, an area that has long been associated with unlicensed businesses and safety concerns.
Local leaders have asked the FBI to increase its involvement in helping address what they describe as an environment that impacts both residents and families in the neighborhood.
A Longstanding Challenge
For many years, Roosevelt Avenue has been known as a challenging area for law enforcement.
While the NYPD has carried out numerous operations, including over 300 arrests this year linked to activity in the corridor, residents say more needs to be done to ensure lasting improvements.
Local Advocacy and Federal Requests
The Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, a community group focused on safety and quality of life, has organized peaceful rallies and written letters to federal officials.
Their request is for a broader investigation into unlicensed establishments and organizations believed to be operating in the area.
“Families and children should be able to enjoy their community without worrying about what they might see on the street,” said Rosa Sanchez, a spokesperson for the coalition.
“We want safer streets and stronger support for our neighborhood.”
The Role of Gangs and Organized Groups
Authorities say several organized groups have been linked to activity in the area, with concerns ranging from human trafficking to fraudulent documents.
Earlier this year, a joint operation involving the FBI, DEA, and local agencies resulted in the arrest of several individuals connected to violent incidents.
Community leaders welcomed the action but believe more consistent efforts are needed.
Support from Elected Officials
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has reportedly requested federal funding to support organizations that help victims of trafficking and provide violence-prevention programs.
Meanwhile, Rep. Grace Meng has said she continues to work with both the NYPD and community leaders, while also seeking federal resources to assist local law enforcement.
A Call for Lasting Change
While residents acknowledge that law enforcement has made progress, many say they hope for a long-term solution that combines community support, federal resources, and strong partnerships between agencies.
“Our community is resilient,” Sanchez added.
“With the right help, Roosevelt Avenue can become a place where families feel safe and proud of where they live.”
