Constituents Say AOC Is Ignoring Rising Crime in Her District
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, widely known for her progressive platform and national presence, is facing mounting criticism from constituents in her Bronx–Queens district.
As she travels the country on her “Fight the Oligarchy” tour with Senator Bernie Sanders, residents at home report a sharp increase in crime that has left them feeling abandoned.
Crimes Spike Dramatically
Since AOC took office in 2019, major crimes—including murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and auto theft—have surged 70% in her district.
That is more than double the 30% increase seen citywide.
The 110th Precinct in Queens experienced a staggering 105% rise, while the 115th Precinct saw an 85% increase.
Community Outraged
Residents are vocal in their dismay.
Elmhurst native Guadalupe Alvarez, once a supporter, lamented that she “could never have a family here” due to escalating dangers.
She accused the congresswoman of ignoring pleas for help—even at town halls.
City Council candidate Ramses Frias added urgency to the criticism:
“People are suffering. They’re scared to go outside.”
Rhetoric vs. Reality
Critics argue that AOC’s anti-police messaging has weakened law enforcement effectiveness, leaving communities more vulnerable.
Hannah Meyers of the Manhattan Institute contends that the “villainizing” of police has discouraged recruitment and endangered public safety.
While AOC remains a high-profile advocate for progressive policies, many of her constituents feel that her focus on national platforms has distracted from addressing local safety concerns.
The dramatic crime increases and residents’ frustration underscore a growing disconnect between her rhetoric and daily reality.
