In Newcastle, the community mourns the tragic loss of seven-year-old Archie York, who has been named by his family as one of the victims in a devastating explosion.

Northumbria Police reported that the blast, which occurred in the early hours of October 16 in the Benwell and Elswick area, also claimed the life of a man in his 30s, whose identity has not yet been confirmed. The police expressed their deepest sympathies, stating, “Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the two people who have tragically lost their lives.”

Specialist officers are providing support to the families, asking that privacy be respected during this difficult time.

Emergency responders rushed to Violet Close following the explosion, where six others, including five adults and a child, were taken to the hospital. All but one of those hospitalized have since been discharged. The remaining patient, a man in his 30s, is reported to be in a critical but stable condition.

Superintendent Darren Adams, speaking at the scene, shared the sorrow felt by the community, calling it a “truly devastating outcome.” He emphasized the unimaginable grief facing the families affected by the tragedy, stating, “The loss and pain they must be suffering is unimaginable.”

Archie’s family has taken to social media, honoring his memory and describing him as a “beautiful, funny, and caring little boy” whose “name deserves to be shouted from the rooftops.” Neighbors echoed these sentiments, describing Archie as a “lovely lad” known and loved by many in the community.

Drone footage from the scene captured the destruction, with one home nearly obliterated and neighboring properties severely impacted by the explosion. Many residents were evacuated from their homes as emergency services secured the area.

As the investigation continues, the community joins together to support the families affected, offering heartfelt condolences in the wake of this tragic event.
