FBI Raid on Fulton County Election Office Followed Yearslong Battle Over 2020 Records

The FBI’s recent raid on the Fulton County election office in Georgia did not happen overnight. According to a detailed review of events, the search was the final step in a prolonged and contentious dispute over access to records from the 2020 presidential election — a conflict that stretched on for more than a year and involved state officials, courts, and eventually federal authorities.

The standoff began as a disagreement between Georgia’s State Election Board and Fulton County election officials over whether all required voting records from the 2020 election were available and properly preserved. At the center of the dispute were absentee ballot materials, ballot images, signature envelopes, tabulator data, and related digital files.

State officials said those records were necessary to examine alleged irregularities in vote tabulation and storage. Fulton County officials, however, disputed claims that records were missing or mishandled, arguing that the county had complied with election laws.

Subpoenas, Delays, and Sealed Records

The State Election Board first issued subpoenas in November 2024, requesting access to thousands of documents tied to the 2020 election. According to state officials, portions of the requested data remained sealed in state court, slowing the investigation and limiting the board’s ability to review the materials.

In October 2025, the board escalated the matter by issuing a second subpoena, demanding all used and void ballots, ballot stubs, signature envelopes, and corresponding digital files from the election.

By December, tensions intensified further when Fulton County officials acknowledged during a state board meeting that more than 130 tabulator tapes — receipt-style records required by state law — were missing required election worker signatures. Those tapes reportedly documented roughly 315,000 early in-person votes from the 2020 election.

A Report That Drew National Attention

The controversy gained wider notice in January when a Georgia-based organization known as the Election Oversight Group released a 236-page report examining Fulton County’s handling of the 2020 ballot count.

The report drew national attention after the Election Integrity Network published a condensed summary connecting the findings to the FBI’s later involvement.

According to the report, Fulton County recorded 148,319 absentee ballots counted in the 2020 general election, while only 125,784 voters were documented as having cast an absentee ballot — a discrepancy of roughly 22,000 ballots, based on voter records cited by the group.

The report also claimed that while tens of thousands of absentee ballots were logged on Election Day, a significantly larger batch was reported in the days that followed. Additionally, the analysis alleged that only a small fraction of ballot images had corresponding authentication files, while the majority of those files were deleted.

Supporters of the report argue it points to systemic failures in recordkeeping. Critics, including county officials, have rejected the conclusions and say the claims misinterpret election procedures.

State and Federal Involvement Escalates

State Election Board members said their concern was not about overturning election results, but about compliance with record-retention and transparency laws.

“Our subpoenas are still open,” State Election Board Vice Chair Janice Johnston said in public remarks. “The board’s official stance was to take custody of those documents.”

As disputes continued, the Georgia board requested help from the U.S. Department of Justice in mid-2025 to enforce compliance. Federal officials later filed a civil rights complaint, and a judge ultimately cleared the way for the state to obtain the disputed materials.

FBI Executes Court-Authorized Search

On January 28, federal agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operations Center in Union City. The FBI removed materials related to the 2020 election as part of the ongoing effort to secure records sought by state authorities.

Officials have not said whether the seized materials confirm or refute the allegations raised in the reports. No criminal charges have been announced, and investigators have emphasized that the search was focused on document access rather than election outcomes.

A Case Still Unfolding

The raid marked a dramatic turning point in a dispute that began quietly and escalated through subpoenas, court battles, and federal involvement. While supporters of the investigation say it highlights the need for stronger election transparency, critics warn against drawing conclusions before all facts are reviewed.

For now, the case remains unresolved — and the materials seized by the FBI may determine what happens next.
