FCC Briefs Lawmakers on George Soros-Linked Media Investigation

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr recently met with members of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) in a closed-door session to provide updates on the ongoing investigation into a major media acquisition linked to billionaire investor George Soros.

The meeting focused on regulatory concerns surrounding the proposed purchase of more than 200 radio stations operated by Audacy, one of the largest radio broadcasters in the United States.

The purchase involves a company reportedly connected to Soros through his investment fund, which acquired approximately 40% of Audacy’s debt after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Representative August Pfluger (TX-11), chairman of the RSC, praised Carr for his efforts to maintain national security and free speech.

“Chairman Carr has been a tireless advocate for free speech and American values,” Pfluger said. “We fully support his leadership in confronting the influence of George Soros, who has worked to reshape media narratives and silence conservative voices.”

During the discussion, Carr emphasized the need to follow established FCC procedures regarding foreign ownership of American media companies.

Current U.S. law limits foreign ownership in broadcasting to 25% unless the FCC grants special approval. Carr raised concerns that standard protocols may have been sidestepped in this particular case.

“There are long-standing procedures in place when it comes to evaluating foreign ownership in media,” Carr said during a previous House Oversight Committee hearing.

“This transaction appears to bypass or fast-track some of those established protocols.”

Republican lawmakers have called for increased scrutiny of the deal, citing potential risks to media independence, fair competition, and national security.

As the investigation continues, both lawmakers and the public remain focused on ensuring transparency, protecting diverse viewpoints, and safeguarding the integrity of local journalism across the country.
