GOP Rep. Brandon Gill Calls for Ilhan Omar’s Deportation, Sparking Controversy
Freshman GOP Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas has stirred debate by calling for the deportation of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) back to Somalia.
Gill made the statement in a post on X, arguing that Omar’s actions raise concerns about her loyalty to the United States.
Gill’s post included a video clip in which Omar appears to advise Somali immigrants—some of whom may be undocumented—on how to handle encounters with federal immigration officers.
In the clip, Omar encourages individuals to exercise their right to remain silent when questioned by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.
Gill’s remarks were met with support from some social media users who criticized Omar’s stance on immigration.
Others accused her of undermining national policies by allegedly assisting undocumented immigrants in evading law enforcement.
In response, Omar dismissed the calls for her deportation as baseless and offensive.
Speaking to journalist Mehdi Hasan, she described such statements as a reflection of declining political discourse in the U.S. and expressed frustration over what she views as inflammatory rhetoric.
Omar, who came to the U.S. as a refugee and later became a naturalized citizen, has been a frequent target of criticism from conservative figures.
However, legal experts note that as a U.S. citizen, she cannot be deported.
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions over immigration policy and political divisions in Congress, particularly regarding how lawmakers address the rights and status of immigrants in the U.S.
