Greenland Strongly Rejects Trump’s Proposal to Join the United States
Greenland has firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement that the United States will acquire the territory “one way or another.”
In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede, issued a powerful 10-word statement: “Kalaallit Nunaat is ours,” using the Greenlandic term for the “Land of People” or the “Land of Greenlanders,” according to an AP report.
Egede further emphasized Greenland’s sovereignty, stating, “We don’t want to be Americans, nor Danes; we are Kalaallit.
The Americans and their leader must understand that. We are not for sale and cannot simply be taken. Our future will be decided by us in Greenland.”
Trump’s Bold Proposal
Trump’s remarks came during a speech to Congress on March 4, where he directly addressed the people of Greenland, saying, “If you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America.”
The president cited national and international security as key reasons for the U.S. interest in Greenland, adding, “We’re working with everybody involved to try and get it. But we need it really for international world security.”
He went on to reassure Greenlanders, saying, “We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America.
We will keep you safe. We will make you rich. And together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.”
Trump then added a controversial remark: “And I think we’re going to get it—one way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
Greenland’s Status and Denmark’s Response
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, is the world’s largest island and has been under Danish rule for 800 years.
While it has its own government, Denmark handles its foreign affairs and defense policies.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, dismissed the idea of Greenland becoming “an integrated part of America.”
He expressed confidence that the upcoming Greenlandic elections would be conducted freely and fairly without external influence.
With strong opposition from both Greenland and Denmark, Trump’s vision of acquiring the territory faces significant challenges.
