Grieving Parents of 10-Year-Old Autumn Bushman Share a Heartbreaking Warning for All Families

In Roanoke, Virginia, the tragic loss of 10-year-old Autumn Bushman has left an entire community in mourning — and her parents, Mark and Summer, are courageously speaking out to help others recognize the warning signs that too often go unnoticed.

Autumn, a bright and energetic fourth-grader at Mountain View Elementary School, was remembered as a kind-hearted child who always stood up for others.

“She was the youngest and probably the wildest,” her mother shared. “She was full of life — doing cartwheels through the living room and always smiling.”

But in the weeks before her death, her parents noticed subtle changes: Autumn began sleeping more, smiling less, and wearing darker clothes.

Behind that change was a heartbreaking truth — Autumn was being bullied, both at school and online.

Despite her parents’ reports to the school, the bullying persisted.

Autumn’s compassion, the same quality that made her stand up for others, sadly made her a target.

“She couldn’t stand to see others mistreated,” her mother said tearfully, “but that kindness came at a cost.”

Her parents are now urging other families to stay vigilant. “Go through your child’s phone,” Summer pleaded.

“Make sure they’re being kind, and that others are being kind to them.”

Roanoke County Public Schools described Autumn’s death as a “tragic loss” and promised a full review, emphasizing their commitment to addressing bullying and supporting the affected community.

Autumn’s story serves as a painful reminder that small changes in behavior can signal deeper struggles — and that open communication, empathy, and awareness can truly save lives.

May her memory be a light that guides others toward compassion and prevention. 💔
