The Hollywood Wedding No One Saw Coming – 34 Years Later, Their Story Still Fascinates
Thirty-four years ago today, Hollywood witnessed one of its most surprising love stories.
On October 6, 1991, screen legend Elizabeth Taylor married construction worker Larry Fortensky at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch — a moment that blended movie-star glamour with down-to-earth romance.
An Unexpected Love Story
Their paths crossed in 1988 at the Betty Ford Clinic, where both were seeking treatment. Despite their age gap and wildly different lives, they bonded quickly.
Elizabeth later said Larry made her feel safe; Larry admired her kindness and warmth. What began in rehab soon grew into a real relationship away from cameras and spotlight.
Larry had never lived in a world of limousines, art collections, or global fame. Elizabeth enjoyed his grounded personality, and he found comfort in her sincerity.

By the end of the year, their romance had become serious.
A Fairytale Wedding at Neverland
Their wedding was as unforgettable as their love story. More than 200 guests arrived at Neverland Ranch, including stars like Liza Minnelli and Eddie Murphy.
Photographers hovered in helicopters, and one even parachuted in trying to get a shot.
Inside, it was pure Hollywood magic — Michael Jackson reportedly danced at the reception, and Elizabeth wore a stunning pale-yellow Valentino gown.
Magical Moments Behind the Scenes
Larry later shared the simple, human moments that defined their marriage, riding Harley-Davidsons along the coast, laughing in the snow in Switzerland, and enjoying burgers at biker bars. Elizabeth even trained her pet parrot to call out, “Larry, Larry!”

Though wealthy, she encouraged an ordinary home life, complete with shared meals and quiet nights.
Why the Marriage Ended
Over time, the differences that once felt charming became difficult. Constant paparazzi attention overwhelmed Larry, and Elizabeth’s declining health added strain. In 1996, after five years of marriage, they divorced but remained on good terms.
Elizabeth continued to help Larry privately through financial and medical hardships, and he spoke of her with affection for the rest of his life.
A Bond That Never Faded
Their final phone call came shortly before Elizabeth was hospitalized. She passed away in 2011 at age 79. Larry later said, “I loved her. I always will. And I know she loved me too.” He died in 2016.
Even today, their unexpected love story remains one of Hollywood’s most memorable — proof that connection can blossom between the most unlikely people.
