Meghan Markle Opens Up About Heartbreaking Loss and Life After Motherhood
The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has shared a deeply personal and emotional story that has moved millions around the world.
In a recent episode of her new podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan opened up about one of the most painful chapters of her life — a miscarriage she experienced in 2020.
During her conversation with Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code and also a miscarriage survivor, Meghan reflected on what it means to experience loss, healing, and hope.
“I’ve spoken about the miscarriage that we experienced,” Meghan said. “
In some parallel way, you have to learn to detach from something that held so much promise and hope – to eventually accept and let go of what you planned to love for a long time.”
Saujani, clearly moved, responded, “I feel like you’re reading my diary. That’s really insightful.”
Revisiting a Painful Chapter
In a 2020 New York Times essay, Meghan first revealed the heartbreaking loss she and Prince Harry suffered.
She described feeling a “sharp cramp” while caring for their son, Archie, at home in Los Angeles. Soon after, the couple went to the hospital, where their grief began to unfold.
Prince Harry later wrote about the same moment in his memoir Spare, sharing that he felt “totally hopeless” as they said goodbye to their unborn child.
“Under a spreading banyan tree, while Meg wept, I dug a hole with my hands and set the tiny package softly in the ground,” he wrote, capturing the raw emotion of their private farewell.
Support and Empathy From Around the World
Following the podcast episode, thousands of people took to social media to express support for Meghan’s openness and courage.
💬 “Be kind to everyone. No one knows what others are dealing with,” one person commented.
💬 “You stay strong, Meghan,” wrote another.
💬 “It’s very brave of you to share something so painful,” added a third.
Many praised her for using her platform to raise awareness about pregnancy loss – a subject often left unspoken but shared by countless families worldwide.
A Conversation About Health and Healing
In her podcast’s debut episode, Meghan also spoke with Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder of the dating app Bumble, about their shared experience with postpartum preeclampsia — a rare and serious condition that occurs after childbirth.
According to the Mayo Clinic, postpartum preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine.
If untreated, it can lead to seizures and other dangerous complications.
“The world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly,” Meghan explained.
“In the silence, you still have to show up for people – especially for your children — while managing something that feels overwhelming.”
Turning Pain Into Purpose
Through honesty and vulnerability, Meghan Markle continues to use her voice to shed light on the realities of motherhood, health, and healing.
Her story has encouraged countless women to speak openly about their own challenges — a reminder that even behind royal titles, there are very human experiences of love, loss, and resilience.
As one listener commented, “Thank you, Meghan, for speaking out. Your strength helps others find theirs.”
