Melania Trump Faces Backlash Over Outfit at Jimmy Carter’s Funeral

Melania Trump, just days away from returning to the White House as First Lady, found herself at the center of social media debates following her appearance at the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter.

The service, held at the Washington National Cathedral, brought together several prominent figures, including current and former U.S. presidents and first ladies, to honor Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.

While many commended Donald and Melania Trump for attending the somber event, the future First Lady’s choice of attire sparked widespread criticism online.

Melania opted for a long black wool belted coat with a contrasting white collar, a collaborative design by Pierpaolo Piccioli and Jun Takahashi of the Japanese label Undercover.

The piece, which also included contributions from a group called the Movement for the Emancipation of Poetry, featured unique lyrical elements.

However, the fashion statement did not sit well with some observers, who likened her outfit to a “pilgrim” or “nun’s habit.”

Critics on social media quickly shared their opinions, with one user remarking, “Did Melania just get off the Mayflower?” Another quipped, “WTF is Melania wearing? Did the nun store have a sale?”

Others described her look as “inappropriate for the occasion” and questioned the choice given the somber nature of the event.

Despite the backlash, Melania remained poised throughout the ceremony, standing by her husband as he prepares to take office for his second term on January 20, 2025.

A Return to the White House

As Donald Trump’s re-election ushers in another term at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Melania has been candid about her plans as First Lady.

Speaking in a recent interview, she emphasized her commitment to balancing her roles as a mother, wife, and public figure.

Unlike her first term, Melania has indicated that she may divide her time between the White House, Palm Beach, and New York City, particularly to support her son, Barron Trump, who recently began college at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Melania has also been working on various personal projects, including a documentary that offers a behind-the-scenes look at her life as First Lady.

According to reports, the project is part of a $40 million deal, with a documentary series expected to follow.

The film will cover her day-to-day responsibilities, from establishing her office to preparing the White House for her family’s return.

Public Opinion on Her Second Term

While her first stint as First Lady faced scrutiny, Melania is optimistic about her second term, stating that she feels more prepared and confident in her role.

“People didn’t accept or understand me the first time,” she explained in a recent interview. “But now, I’m standing on my own two feet, independent. I have my own thoughts, and I don’t always agree with what my husband says or does, and that’s okay.”

As the Trumps prepare for their return to Washington, Melania’s every move will undoubtedly be closely observed.

Whether she will face continued criticism or win over her skeptics remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the role of First Lady is as complex and scrutinized as ever.
