Mitt Romney Calls for Unity in Powerful Farewell Speech After Years of Criticizing Trump
In a heartfelt farewell address to the U.S. Senate, Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) called for bipartisanship and national unity, delivering a message that reflected both his decades of public service and his concerns for the nation’s future.
Romney, who previously served as Governor of Massachusetts and was the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, acknowledged both his achievements and disappointments during his time in office.
“I will leave this chamber with a sense of achievement,” Romney said. “But in truth, I will also leave with the recognition that I did not achieve everything I had hoped.”
⚖️ A Call for Fiscal Responsibility and Cooperation
Romney expressed particular frustration with partisan gridlock and its impact on national issues, especially the growing U.S. debt.
“The scourge of partisan politics has frustrated repeated efforts to stabilize our national debt,” he said, warning that without interest payments on the debt, the nation could afford “three times as many aircraft, ships, drones, and cyber defenses—or double the amount spent monthly on Social Security.”
🇺🇸 Subtle Farewell — and a Veiled Critique
While Romney refrained from naming specific individuals, he appeared to reference former President Donald Trump, with whom he had clashed repeatedly over the years.
“There are some today who would tear at our unity, who would replace love with hate, who deride our foundation of virtue, or who debase the values upon which the blessings of heaven depend.”
Romney emphasized that politics alone cannot solve the challenges America faces, urging leaders and citizens alike to rise above division and stand for shared values.
🙏 “God Has Blessed America Because America Is Good”
Romney paid tribute to his home state of Utah, calling its people a source of inspiration and integrity.
He also reflected on America’s foundational principles, drawing from both history and faith:
“United we stand is a fitting refrain,” he said. “Like all people, we have made mistakes—some grievous—but often our mistakes have come from misguided understanding.

God has blessed America because America is good.”
🔚 Returning to Civilian Life With a Message of Hope
Concluding his remarks, Romney said he was proud of his 25 years in public service, but was now ready to return to private life — not as a politician, but as a citizen committed to unity and virtue.
“A country’s character is a reflection not just of its elected officials, but also of its people,” he said.
“I leave Washington to return to be one among them—and hope to be a voice of unity and virtue.”
📌 Romney’s speech comes at a pivotal time in American politics, as questions of leadership, division, and national identity loom large heading into the 2024 election.
