Robert Downey Jr. Wins First Oscar, Thanks ‘Terrible Childhood’ and Lawyer for Bailing Him Out of Jail

After more than 30 years in Hollywood, with over 70 film credits and three Academy Award nominations, Robert Downey Jr. secured his first Oscar at the 2024 Academy Awards. Winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Downey humorously thanked his challenging childhood and the Academy in his acceptance speech. He expressed gratitude to his wife, Susan Downey, for rescuing him and bringing him back to life.

Downey revealed a personal insight, stating, “Here’s my little secret: I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it.” He acknowledged the importance of their craft and thanked the cast for making meaningful choices. The actor also expressed gratitude to his team and gave a special shoutout to his entertainment lawyer of 40 years.

Portraying Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer,” Downey beat out fellow nominees Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling, and Mark Ruffalo for the prestigious award.
