Scientists Study 117-Year-Old Woman’s DNA to Reveal Secrets of a Longer, Healthier Life

Maria Branyas Morera, a remarkable Spanish supercentenarian, lived an extraordinary life that spanned 117 years before her passing.

Born in the United States in 1907 and later settling in Catalonia in 1915, Maria witnessed two world wars, 21 American presidents, and countless innovations that reshaped the modern world.

Before her passing, she made one final request: that scientists study her DNA to uncover the secrets of her longevity.

A team of researchers from the University of Barcelona and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute carried out a detailed analysis of her cells and genetic profile.

Their findings revealed that, biologically, Maria was 10 to 15 years younger than her chronological age, showing the vitality of a centenarian despite her 117 years.

One striking discovery was her exceptionally balanced cholesterol levels—very low in harmful fats while high in protective “good” cholesterol.

Combined with her active lifestyle, free from smoking or alcohol, and her strong social connections, Maria embodied a model of healthy living. Scientists also pointed to her love for La Fageda yogurt, a probiotic-rich food that may have supported her gut health and reduced inflammation.

Interestingly, Maria’s telomeres—the protective ends of chromosomes—were unusually short, a factor often linked to aging and disease.

Yet in her case, researchers believe this may have limited the growth of harmful cells, turning what is usually a weakness into an advantage.

Dr. Manel Esteller, lead investigator of the study, emphasized that extreme longevity results from both genetics and lifestyle choices.

While Maria inherited “very good genes” from her parents, her habits—exercise, diet, and social engagement—likely played just as big a role.

Her story highlights that aging does not always equal poor health and offers valuable clues for extending quality of life.

Maria Branyas Morera remains a symbol of resilience, balance, and the fascinating science behind human longevity.
