Senator Adam Schiff Under Federal Criminal Investigation Over Mortgage Claims
Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, is currently under federal investigation amid allegations of mortgage fraud, following a criminal referral submitted to the Department of Justice by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) in May 2025.
The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland.
Allegations Rooted in Residence Claims
The allegations accuse Schiff of repeatedly designating a property in Potomac, Maryland as his primary residence on mortgage refinancing applications between 2009 and 2013—even though he was serving as a U.S. Representative for California at the time.
The Maryland home remained listed as his primary address until 2020.
Simultaneously, Schiff claimed a homeowner’s tax exemption on a condo in Burbank, California, which he also listed as his primary residence, giving him substantial tax benefits.
Officials allege this dual representation allowed him to exploit lower mortgage rates and tax breaks improperly.
Scope of Legal Concerns
According to FHFA Director William Pulte, Schiff may have violated federal criminal statutes, including those against wire fraud, bank fraud, mail fraud, and making false statements to financial institutions.
The $7,000 property tax savings he garnered in California further illustrates alleged misuse of residency claims.
Political Context and Schiff’s Response
President Donald Trump publicly demanded Schiff be “brought to justice” for the alleged fraud, echoing a criminal referral based on claims of “a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud.”
Schiff has denied any wrongdoing and characterized the allegations as politically motivated retaliation.
Broader Trend and Investigative Momentum
This investigation is part of a larger pattern involving mortgage-related accusations against prominent Democrats—including Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and New York Attorney General Letitia James—which have raised concerns about the weaponization of federal agencies.

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is confronted about his blatant mortgage fraud.
He doesn’t deny that he committed it, he just says he’s “been very open” and “there’s no there there.”
Only problem, we’ve already seen the documents. He’s guilty of mortgage fraud.pic.twitter.com/gi7Z8vaRRg
