Tarzan Star Ron Ely’s Final Years Marked by Heartbreak and Loss

Ron Ely, the actor forever associated with the iconic role of Tarzan in the 1960s television series, passed away at the age of 86, closing the chapter on a life that brought adventure to millions—but ended in deep personal tragedy.

While Ely was celebrated for his strong screen presence and wholesome image, his final years were overshadowed by a devastating family loss that shocked Hollywood and the public alike.

A Tragic Turning Point

In October 2019, Ely’s life was irrevocably changed when his wife of 35 years, Valerie Lundeen Ely, was killed at their home in Santa Barbara, California.

Authorities said Valerie, who was 62, died after suffering multiple stab wounds. Their son, Cameron Ely, was identified at the scene as the suspect.

Deputies later located Cameron outside the home. According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, officers were unable to gain verbal control of him and determined he posed a threat.

Cameron, who was 30 years old, was fatally shot by deputies at the scene. No officers were injured.

Who Was Valerie Lundeen Ely?

Valerie Lundeen was a former flight attendant and beauty pageant titleholder.

In 1980, she won Miss Airline International, and the following year she was crowned Miss Florida USA, later competing in the Miss USA pageant.

Her connection to pageantry mirrored her husband’s own ties—Ron Ely hosted the Miss America competition in 1980 and 1981.

The couple married in 1984 and had three children: Kirsten, Kaitland, and Cameron. Valerie also became a grandmother in 2018, a role she reportedly cherished.

Aftermath and Legal Action

Following the incident, Ron Ely largely remained out of the public eye. In October 2020, he filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Court documents later reported by People alleged that Cameron was attempting to surrender when he was shot multiple times by deputies.

Authorities stated that separate criminal, coroner’s, and administrative investigations were conducted.

A Quiet End to a Public Life

Ron Ely retired from acting in 2001, aside from a brief appearance in a 2014 TV movie.

Once a symbol of strength and heroism on screen, his later years were spent dealing with unimaginable grief.

His passing marked the end of a life defined by two very different chapters—one filled with fame, admiration, and adventure, and another shaped by profound personal loss.

Ron Ely leaves behind a legacy remembered not only for his role as Tarzan, but also for the resilience he showed in the face of tragedy.
