Teacher Replaces U.S. Flag with Pride Flag, Asks Students to Pledge Allegiance
A recent TikTok video by Kristin Pitzen, an Orange County teacher, has stirred controversy after she joked about removing the American flag from her classroom because it made her feel “uncomfortable.”
In the video, Pitzen explained that she took down the flag, saying, “I put it away somewhere I don’t remember, and I haven’t found it yet,” laughing as she spoke.
The teacher went on to describe how she encourages her students to pledge allegiance to the Pride flag instead.
She also stated that during the daily Pledge of Allegiance, she gives her students the option to stand or remain seated, saying, “Stand if you feel like it, don’t stand if you feel like it; say the words if you want, you don’t have to say the words.”
Parents and community members expressed strong reactions, with many voicing concerns that her approach could encourage disrespect toward the American flag, a longstanding symbol of national patriotism.
The video was later taken down, but it continues to prompt discussions on social media and beyond regarding respect for national symbols in school settings.
Pitzen’s actions have raised questions around the balance between personal values and public school protocols, with some calling for clarity on guidelines that preserve both individual expression and respect for the symbols of national unity.
