Tributes Pour In Following the Sudden Passing of Celebrity Chef Anne Burrell
The culinary world is mourning the sudden loss of Anne Burrell, beloved celebrity chef and longtime Food Network personality, who sadly passed away at her home in Brooklyn on June 17.
According to the New York City Police Department, Burrell was found “unconscious and unresponsive” and was pronounced at rest at the scene.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has not yet announced an official cause.
Her family released a heartfelt statement honoring Anne’s memory:
“Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend. Her smile lit up every room she entered. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”
The news was especially shocking because Anne had been seen in great spirits just the night before, performing at The Second City New York. Audience members described her as joyful and full of life.
“Everyone said she was so great last night and so happy,” a source shared, while another confirmed, “Typical fun, outgoing Anne, having a blast.”
Only days earlier, Anne posted happily on her Instagram, sharing an encounter from her Brooklyn neighborhood:
“I ran into @greenladyofbrooklyn in my neighborhood today!! … She is just lovely!!! #ilovewhatido #luckygirl 💚💚💚”
Throughout her career, Anne Burrell became a household name on shows like Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell, and her unforgettable appearances on Iron Chef America.
Beyond cooking, Anne dedicated herself to charitable causes, working with organizations like City Harvest, the Garden of Dreams Foundation, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Anne often spoke about her passion for cooking and its emotional connection:
“I truly in my heart feel that your food knows how you’re feeling when you cook it and it reacts accordingly,” she said in a past interview.
She was also a strong advocate of mise en place—the principle of staying organized and preparing ahead to ensure success in the kitchen.
Anne is survived by her husband Stuart Claxton, his son Javier, her mother Marlene, her sister Jane, and her brother Ben.
Her warmth, energy, and contributions to the world of food will always be remembered by those she inspired.
