Whoopi Goldberg Claims Bakery Refused Her Order Due to Her Views – Here’s the Owner’s Response
Whoopi Goldberg recently shared a surprising story on The View, alleging that a Staten Island bakery refused to fulfill her birthday order because of her political views. The discussion unfolded as Goldberg celebrated her 69th birthday, reminiscing about her late mother’s favorite treat, Charlotte Russe desserts. Despite the initial challenges, her team managed to secure the desserts for the celebration.
Goldberg claimed the bakery gave her conflicting reasons for the refusal, such as an issue with their ovens, but she believed it stemmed from her liberal political stance. “They didn’t like my politics,” Goldberg stated, without naming the bakery.
The Bakery Speaks Out
The bakery in question was later identified as Holtermann’s, a family-owned Staten Island institution with a history spanning 145 years. Owner Jill Holtermann strongly denied Goldberg’s allegations, attributing the issue to technical difficulties.
In an interview, Holtermann explained, “We’ve had ongoing issues with an old boiler in our building, which dates back to 1930. I told Whoopi, ‘I can’t do it right now,’ because we were facing infrastructure challenges.”
Despite the initial hesitation, Holtermann clarified that the bakery ultimately fulfilled the order, preparing 50 Charlotte Russe desserts in time for Goldberg’s celebration. She expressed frustration over the backlash her business has received since Goldberg’s comments, stating that they’ve been inundated with negative calls.
Holtermann emphasized that the decision had nothing to do with politics. “I didn’t want to make a promise I couldn’t keep, especially with all the issues we were dealing with,” she said.
While Goldberg speculated that political differences may have played a role, Holtermann insists it was a logistical matter, leaving the small business caught in the crossfire of a high-profile misunderstanding.
