Bear Caesar: From Years of Torture to a Taste of Freedom
Imagine spending nearly your entire life confined to a metal cage, unable to move freely or experience the beauty of nature.
Sadly, this was the heartbreaking reality for Caesar, a moon bear who spent years trapped on a bile farm in China.
For most of her life, Caesar was chained inside a tiny cage, forced to wear a cruel metal “torture vest” designed to drain bile from her gallbladder — a substance used in traditional medicine.
The process left her in constant pain, deep wounds, and emotional trauma, as her body was repeatedly violated for profit.
But in 2004, hope finally arrived. Caesar was rescued by the incredible team at Animals Asia, an organization dedicated to ending bear bile farming and improving animal welfare across Asia. Her rescuers described the device she was trapped in as “the worst imaginable bile farm torture.”
Once free, Caesar began her long road to recovery at Animals Asia’s sanctuary in Chengdu, China.
With patience, care, and love, she transformed from a broken, frightened bear into a strong, confident, and beautiful symbol of resilience.
By 2016, rescuers proudly shared that her scars had nearly vanished.
Caesar loved to dig in the dirt, swim under the sun, and relax in the cool autumn breeze — all simple joys she had been denied for so long.
“Seeing a bear shake themselves like this is always a moment full of awe,” said Nic Field, director of Animals Asia’s China bear and vet team.
“It’s hard to imagine her existence back then when you see her basking in the sunshine today.”
Sadly, despite her newfound happiness, the years of abuse had taken an irreversible toll.

Caesar eventually passed away from a tumor caused by repeated gallbladder extractions — a tragic reminder of the cruelty she endured.
Even so, her legacy lives on as a beacon of hope. Caesar’s story reminds us why the fight to end bear bile farming must continue.
Today, an estimated 10,000 bears remain in captivity in China, still suffering the same fate Caesar once did.
💔 Every bear deserves the chance to live freely — to roam, to play, to simply be.
