My Daughter Forgot All About My 90th Birthday, So I Was Alone Until the Doorbell Rang

It’s really significant to reach a milestone birthday, particularly when you approach 90. Dorothy was excited to celebrate her 90th birthday with her daughter Lila and her grandkids, the people she loved the most in her life. Since Lila hadn’t been spending much time with her family, Dorothy was thrilled when Lila promised to plan a modest celebration for her mother. She couldn’t wait for that day to come. The elderly mother, who felt alone after her husband’s death, enjoyed spending time with her grandkids.

They looked like their father David, whom Lila had just divorced, but they also reminded her of Lila, her own daughter. Dorothy loved David as if he were her son, which made her unhappy that her daughter and her husband had broken up. However, she understood that this was a reality of life and that there was nothing she could do to make things right.

Dorothy was quite thrilled on her birthday, but as time went by and Lila was nowhere to be seen, her enthusiasm gave way to fear. Moreover, Lila was not returning Dorothy’s calls.

The doorbell finally rang after waiting for hours on end. Dorothy answered the door as quickly as she could given her elderly age. But it was David waiting there with a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates, not Lila and the grandkids.

“Happy Birthday, Mom!” David smiled as he said that.

“David? Whoa, what a surprise! You didn’t have to,” Dorothy said, surprised to see him there. Thank goodness he remembered at all. That was expected, however, since David had always been a very considerate guy. Dorothy extended an invitation to him to supper. David wasn’t sure at first, but he said yes when he saw that Dorothy was by herself.

David, who is a fantastic chef, even assisted his ex-mother-in-law in preparing the meal. When they sat down to eat, David asked about Lila. He wondered if she would mind him being there, at her mom’s house. Dorothy said she wouldn’t because she probably wasn’t coming since she hadn’t returned any of Dorothy’s calls. After a brief conversation, David explained to Dorothy why her daughter wouldn’t be visiting her on her birthday.

David replied in a troubled tone, “It turns out Lila, her new boyfriend, and the kids are all on vacation.”

It shocked Dorothy. Why her daughter would keep such a thing from her was beyond her comprehension. Another thing that infuriated David was that Lila had taken the kids on vacation without notifying him or seeking his permission.

“She had made a casual reference, but an entire vacation? Additionally, it seemed like they had been organizing everything for a month or so. Excuse me, Dorothy, but I believe your daughter has taken things a little too far this time,” David said, visibly disturbed.

Dorothy felt let down. The very least Lila could have done was inform her mother and her children’s father of her intentions and that she would not be there for Dorothy’s milestone birthday. Later, Dorothy had a few words with her daughter, but her act still felt like a betrayal.
