Walter Parazaider, Founding Member of Chicago, Dies at 81

The music world is mourning the loss of Walter Parazaider, the founding member and longtime saxophonist of the legendary rock band Chicago, who has died at the age of 81 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

The news was shared by his daughter in an emotional social media post, where she revealed that her father had passed away peacefully after several difficult years.

She described him as both her father and her hero, expressing gratitude that his long struggle had come to an end while remembering the close bond they shared.

Parazaider was instrumental in shaping the sound that made Chicago one of the most successful bands in rock history.

Born on March 14, 1945, in Maywood, Illinois, he dreamed of creating a rock band that combined powerful guitars with a dynamic horn section.

That vision became reality in 1967, when he co-founded Chicago alongside Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, and Danny Seraphine.

The band’s innovative blend of rock, jazz, and brass arrangements helped produce a string of classic songs, including “If You Leave Me Now,” “You’re the Inspiration,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” and “Just You ‘n’ Me.”

Beyond his exceptional musicianship on saxophone, flute, and clarinet, Parazaider also played an important role during the group’s early years by helping organize performances and supporting the band’s development before it achieved international success.

In a tribute, Chicago credited Parazaider’s original vision of combining rock music with horns as the foundation of the band’s unmistakable sound, noting that the group’s musical identity began with his idea.

His memorable performances, including the flute solo on “Color My World” and the soprano saxophone solo on “Just You ‘n’ Me,” remain among the band’s most celebrated recordings.

After more than five decades with Chicago, Parazaider stepped away from touring in 2017 due to health concerns, leaving behind an extraordinary musical legacy. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, recognizing its lasting impact on popular music.

Following news of his passing, fellow musicians, industry leaders, and fans from around the world shared tributes celebrating his talent, creativity, and influence on generations of artists.

Walter Parazaider leaves behind not only an unforgettable catalog of music but also a legacy of innovation that helped redefine what a rock band could sound like. His contributions continue to inspire musicians and listeners around the world, ensuring that his music will live on for generations to come.
