Heartbroken dog “cries endlessly” after 260 days in the shelter — yearning for a loving forever home

Long-term stays in shelters can significantly impact a dog’s well-being, leading many to lose their once-bright spirits after facing repeated rejection.

This is the unfortunate reality for Major, a 4-year-old terrier/pitbull mix in Indiana who has spent over 260 days in the Humane Society for Hamilton County.

Major, once full of hope and joy, now “cries endlessly” after being abandoned by his previous owners and overlooked by potential adopters.

Major’s story began when he was taken in as a stray last summer.

Despite being microchipped and contactable, his original owners never returned for him. Initially, Major remained in good spirits. Described as a “sweet and sensitive” dog with a big heart, Major loved playing with his Jolly Ball and quickly became a staff favorite, earning nicknames like “Major Hunk” and “Major Heartthrob.”

However, the constant rejection has dimmed his once-spunky personality. He now spends his days in the shelter’s visiting room, crying and longing for a family to call his own.

The Humane Society staff believes Major would thrive in a home without young children or cats.

While he can get along with other dogs, a meet-and-greet is encouraged due to his strength.

They are hopeful that there is a perfect family out there who can provide Major with the love and care he deserves.

“If you’re ready to welcome a loving, strong, and playful friend into your life, Major is the one for you!” reads his adoption page.

Those interested in adopting Major can fill out an application on the Humane Society of Hamilton County’s website and arrange a visit.

It is heartbreaking to see Major lose his spirits after so long in the shelter, and we hope he finds his forever home soon.
